A fitting post for Valentine\u2019s Day I feel. My\u00a0apologies\u00a0to all those who wish this to be \u2018just another day\u2019 with no mention of the ‘V’ word!<\/p>\n

I give you, the poem \u2018I\u2019m just a dog breeder\u2019s husband\u2019. I hope you all enjoy it.<\/p>\n

I’m just a dog breeder’s husband,<\/h5>\n
I no longer rule my domain.<\/h5>\n
Even if kindly invited,<\/h5>\n
from opinions I wisely refrain.<\/h5>\n
I’m just a glorified kennel boy<\/h5>\n
of minor importance I know.<\/h5>\n
It seems my primary function<\/h5>\n
is merely providing the dough.<\/h5>\n
Now dog breeding is not inexpensive,<\/h5>\n
as you all no doubt are aware –<\/h5>\n
but the problem’s not so much the money<\/h5>\n
as the bustle, the wear and the tear.<\/h5>\n
Having studied the layback of shoulder<\/h5>\n
and becoming an expert on feet,<\/h5>\n
I still have not learned to give worm pills<\/h5>\n
or how much the puppy should eat.<\/h5>\n
My spouse will spend hours grooming<\/h5>\n
her Bred By Exhibitor bitch.<\/h5>\n
But when it comes to scratching my back,<\/h5>\n
her thought is to let the thing itch.<\/h5>\n
Some day I hope that my wife’ll<\/h5>\n
take me wandering to some foreign vale,<\/h5>\n
instead of inspecting the stifle<\/h5>\n
of some Special stud at Hinsdale.<\/h5>\n
Off in a crowded hotel room<\/h5>\n
after the dog show is o’er,<\/h5>\n
someone questions the judges decision<\/h5>\n
while they reach for another drink more<\/h5>\n
It appears that his eyesight is failing,<\/h5>\n
his errors in judgment immense.<\/h5>\n
In fact if I did not know better<\/h5>\n
you’d doubt if he had any sense.<\/h5>\n
One finds that the amateur’s bungling<\/h5>\n
is no match for professional skills.<\/h5>\n
A handler can hide what the owner admits<\/h5>\n
as he tries hard his conscience to still.<\/h5>\n
The din and the utter confusion<\/h5>\n
of everyone talking at once<\/h5>\n
leaves one weary, hoarse and irascible<\/h5>\n
and the next day a bleary eyed dunce<\/h5>\n
Sometimes late in the evening,<\/h5>\n
I’m asked if I do not agree<\/h5>\n
that Pottowattamies Bridget<\/h5>\n
Is somewhat out at the knee.<\/h5>\n
But before I can answer the question<\/h5>\n
I find my answer ignored \u2013<\/h5>\n
for some inexplicable reason<\/h5>\n
my questioner’s suddenly bored.<\/h5>\n
I’m only a dog breeders husband,<\/h5>\n
not that I mean to complain –<\/h5>\n
but I find certain aspects amazing<\/h5>\n
when I aspire my role to explain.<\/h5>\n
I know at least where I\u2019m going –<\/h5>\n
I’m rapidly going to seed.<\/h5>\n
But I’ve learned about Winner’s Bitches<\/h5>\n
I married the Best of the Breed<\/h5>\n
